Ingredients
  

For the Noodles

  • 12 sheets Lasagna Noodles traditional or no-boil

For the Meat Sauce

  • 1 pound Ground Beef or ground turkey
  • 1 cup Onion chopped
  • 3 cloves Garlic minced
  • 28 ounces Canned Crushed Tomatoes or whole tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato Paste
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Oregano or three times fresh
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Basil or Italian seasoning
  • to taste Salt
  • to taste Black Pepper

For the Cheese Mixture

  • 15 ounces Ricotta Cheese or cottage cheese
  • 2 cups Shredded Mozzarella low-moisture recommended
  • 1/2 cup Grated Parmesan or Pecorino Romano
  • 1 large Egg or flax egg for vegan

For the Garnish

  • 1/4 cup Fresh Basil Leaves or parsley
  • 1/2 cup Heavy Cream or half-and-half

Preparation Steps

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Boil lasagna noodles in salted water until al dente, about 8-10 minutes, then drain and set aside.
  • In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Add chopped onion and minced garlic, sautéing until translucent.
  • Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer for about 15 minutes.
  • In a bowl, combine ricotta, 1 cup of mozzarella, grated Parmesan, beaten egg, and fresh basil. Mix until smooth.
  • Pour heavy cream into a small bowl, setting it aside for drizzling later.
  • In a baking dish, spread a layer of meat sauce, then place 4 noodles on top. Spread half of the ricotta mixture, top with meat sauce, and drizzle with cream. Repeat with another layer.
  • Finish with the last layer of noodles, top with remaining meat sauce and sprinkle with mozzarella.
  • Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake for 15-20 more minutes until bubbling and golden brown.
  • Let the lasagna rest for 10 minutes before slicing and garnish with fresh basil leaves.

Notes

Serve with a freshly tossed salad and crusty bread for a complete meal.
